International Honours – Republic of Ireland Junior International Caps – Mayo
Christy McHale (Castlebar Celtic)
Christy was the first Mayo player to be capped for Ireland. He played at Junior International level back in the 1930’s
Josie Feeney (Castlebar Celtic)
Josie was first selected for the Republic of Ireland on Easter Monday 1959. He was also selected on the Irish team which lost to a Birmingham F.A. selection at St. Andrews Park at the end of the 1958/59 season.
Chris Keane (Westport Utd)
Chris donned the Irish jersey for the first and only time on the 24th May 1969 when he played at right half on the Republic’s Junior team in a challenge game against the Birmingham F.A. at Sutton Coldfield.
Fergus McEllin (Castlebar Celtic)
Fergie was “capped” on the 7th September 1980 when he played for Republic of Ireland against the Isle of Man F.A. in Douglas.
Fergal Forde (Ballina Town)
The Ballina Town midfielder, and captain of Mayo’s Oscar Traynor team, received his first International cap in a friendly versus Northern Ireland at Bellurgan Park, Dundalk on 18th May 2002. Fergal gave a fine performance in the last half hour of that game when introduced as a substitute, and scored the winning goal in a 2 – 1 win for the Republic. Fergal went on to win several more caps (5) for the Republic and also competed for Ireland in the Regions Cup in Sweden.
Joe Lawless (Westport Utd)
Joe won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in the 2006/2007 season having been one of Westport’s star performers in the previous season’s F.A.I. Junior cup win – more details to follow.
Steve Ryan (Castlebar Celtic)
Steve won his cap having been spotted by International Manager Gerry Smyth during the 2006/7 F.A.I. Junior Cup campaign when Castelbar Celtic reached the semi final. Steve scored the opening goal for the Republic of Ireland in a 3 – 1 win in Tolka Park against the Basque Region of Spain.
Mick Duffy (Ballina Town)
Mick received his first Junior International cap in a game versus the U.S. A. in 2007 when he came on as a substitute in the second half of that game. Mick was selected on the Republic of Ireland panel for the Quarangular International Tournament in Co Down in April 2010 invloving Northern Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland. Mick started in the second game of that tournament versus Northern Ireland and opened the scoring for the Republic with a fine goal after 20 minutes - that game ended in 1 - 1 draw.
