Quigley Cup
A Schoolboys Committee was formed in 1973 from the members of the Mayo League, and a formalised competition for youths was put in place. Mayo League official, Pat Quigley donated a cup for an Under 18 competition, and the Quigley Cup has remained the Mayo underage game’s most prized trophy up to the present day.
In those early days, Pat Quigley was deeply involved in running Youth Football in Castlebar, and was associated
with the Road Rangers Club from 1971 onwards. Road Rangers were formed in 1969 and later amalgamated with Castlebar Celtic in 1974. Ironically, Road Rangers became the first club to win the splendid new trophy in the 1973/74 season when the defeated Westport Crusaders in the final.
In noting this wonderful contribution to the game of football in Mayo by Pat Quigley, the then League Secretary Paddy Flynn commented in 1973 – “He has put his words into action at considerable personal expense as far as Youths football is concerned. I am sure that the years ahead will prove that this magnificent work will pay rich dividends.” Tom Kelly of the Connaught Telegraph says in his book on Mayo football “Boots, Rules and Fantasy Free” that Paddy Flynn was never renowned as possessing a gift of divine prophesy, but it came to pass that Pat Quigley was elected President of the F.A.I. Youths Council in the summer of 1989 and served two years in that position, and 5 years as president of the F.A.I Senior Council.
Pat Quigley has remained a stalwart of the game of football in Mayo ever since. He has been a leading figure in the growth and expansion of the game in Mayo together with his deep involvement in the development of the Mayo League’s headquarters at Milebush Park in Castlebar.
Pat has held many officer positions within the Mayo League over 37 years, including two terms as Chairman covering a 10 year period. He has also been Chairman of the Connaught Football Association, and Chairman of the F.A.I. and U.E.F.A. Youths Committees. Pat was installed as President of the Football Association of Ireland (F.A.I.) 26th April 1996, and served for a 5 year term.
Pat is married to Eleanor, and they have two children – Patricia and Shane, and two grandchildren – Aaron and Joshua. The entire family are avid Liverpool fans.
