MATCH REPORTS - BY KENETH GANNON
MAYO V SLIGO LEITRIM (GROUP STAGE)
Mayo took on Sligo/Leitrim in their opening Group 8 encounter in the famous Bowl pitch in Limerick in real summery conditions this evening and it was a nervy encounter. Sligo/Leitrim started the more relaxed side and looked a threat going forward, while Mayo looked to be going through a period of first match nerves. Mayo did come close through Fionnaun Duffy and Jesse Devers but Sligo/Leitrim broke the deadlock midways into the first half. Mayo responded quickly when Noe Baba set up Fionnaun Duffy to level matters. Sligo/Leitrim, after having two goals disallowed, regained the lead near the break, but Michael Bell made a vital tackle just on half time, while Noe Baba whacked the crossbar with an angled strike and Jesse Devers fired wide.
The second half saw a similar pattern emerging and Sligo/Leitrim kept causing problems to the Mayo rearguard. Mayo did make attacking phases, but the neighbours rearguard snuffed out the threat. Sligo scored two goals in quick succession to go 4-1 up, but Mayo rallied to finish strongly and did manage to pull a goal back through Jamie Feeney. Mayo pressed to narrow the margin further but now face two tough encounters against Longford and Kerry. Longford beat Kerry 2-1, so there is a lot to play for.
Mayo: Matthew Flanagan, Gary Boylan, Sean Keaney, Michael Bell, Jarlath O'Malley, Noe Baba, Patrick Moran, Liam Flatley, Simon Butler, Fionnaun Duffy, Jesse Devers. Subs: Cian Coleman-Keaney, Sean Morrisey-O'Malley, Brian Spring-Moran, Jamie-Feeney-Duffy, Gary Walsh-Butler.
MAYO V LONGFORD (GROUP STAGE)
Mayo took on a strong Longford side in Limerick this morning, hoping to get their cup campaign on track and Mayo, with some changes from last night, started off brightly and looked defensively secure with Noe Baba and Michael Bell keeping things tight at the back. Mayo mixed their traditional short passing game with some spectacular long range passing, with Jamie Feeney and Simon Butler looking positive in attack early on. Mayo did have their opportunities through Fionnaun Duffy and Liam Flatley, but Longford defended resolutely to repel any Mayo attack, allowing themselves to hold out for a scoreless half.
The second half saw Mayo on the attack with Simon Butler getting in behind the Longford defence and Mayo had a shout for a penalty turned down following a handball. Noe Baba fired a free kick over and Fionnaun Duffy set up Simon Butler, and his acrobatic volley whistled past the post. Longford started to gain the upper hand in the latter stages and intercepted a loose pass to set up an attack to put themselves 1-0 up. Mayo began to chase the game but a ball over the top opened up Mayo one more time and Longford were on hand to punish. Mayo had little time to earn a consolation goal and the Midlanders held out for victory. Sligo/Leitrim's 1-1 draw with Kerry means that Mayo will now be playing in Shield One or Shield Two, competitions that Mayo both won. Mayo take on Kerry at 7:00 tonight.
Mayo: Matthew Gallagher, Sean Morrisey, Noe Baba, Michael Bell, Gary Boylan, Liam Flatley, Jarlath O'Malley, Gary Walsh, Jamie Feeney, Simon Butler, Fionnaun Duffy.
Subs: Patrick Moran-Jarlath O'Malley, Jessie Devers-Jamie Feeney, Cian Coleman-Gary Walsh.
MAYO V LONGFORD (GROUP STAGE)
Mayo took on Kerry in the last group game last night, looking to achieve their first win in the group stages. Mayo took the game to
Kerry and were creating loads of opportunities with Liam Flatley constantly probing the Southwesterner's defence. Kerry looked dangerous going forward and the Mayo defence had to be on their toes. Gary Walsh had a great opportunity for Mayo, but could not connect with Jason Hunt's cross and Jesse Devers came close. Just before the break, Adam Chambers made a great take from a dangerous Kerry cross and both sides went in on par terms at the break.
Mayo began the second half brightly, and came very close when Noe Baba hit the frame of the goalpost and Brian Spring had an effort cleared off the line. Kerry came more into the game and forced the issue by winning corners. From one of the corners, Kerry took the lead through a freak goal, which knocked the stuffing out of a Mayo side that deserved to be taking something out of the game. Mayo battled to recover but Kerry held out for a win that was scarcely deserved, and put Mayo into the Kennedy Trophy quarter final against North Tipperary.
Mayo: Adam Chambers, Sean Morrisey, Michael Bell, Noe Baba, Gary Boylan, Liam Flatley, Brian Spring, Patrick Moran, Jason Hunt, Gary Walsh, Jesse Devers.
Subs: Kiefer Curry-Brian Spring, Jarlath O'Malley-Gary Boylan, Simon Butler-Gary Walsh, Fionan Duffy-Jason Hunt.
MAYO V NORTH TIPPERARY (KENNEDY TROPHY QUARTER-FINAL)
Mayo were still looking for a win against North Tipperary in the quarter final of the Kennedy Trophy, making a few changes. Mayo started off very positive and were cutting through North Tipperary, with Liam Flatley looking lively. Mayo took a deserved lead when Noe Baba fed Simon Butler to finish neatly. Matthew Flanagan had to make a smart save at the other end to keep the Premier County North boys out.
Mayo had further opportunities to extend their lead through Simon Butler, Noe Baba, Jason Hunt and Liam Flatley to put the game beyond doubt in the second half as they looked settled, composed in possession, and rarely troubled. The Westerners did enough to win the game and set themselves up for a semi final tie against Drogheda tomorrow morning at 10:30. It is a nice tie to be involved in and victory will guarantee Mayo a fifth consecutive final at the Kennedy Cup.
Mayo: Matthew Flanagan, Sean Morrisey, Sean Keaney, Noe Baba, Gary Boylan, Darragh Quinn, Gary Walsh, Kiefer Curry, Jason Hunt, Liam Flatley, Simon Butler.
Subs: Jarlath O'Malley-Gary Boylan, Jamie Feeney-Darragh Quinn, Jesse Devers-Jason Hunt, Patrick Moran-Gary Walsh, Brian Spring-Kiefer Curry.
MAYO V DROGHEDA (KENNEDY TROPHY SEMI-FINAL)
Mayo took on Drogheda in the Kennedy Trophy Semi Final this morning and started off the game under the cosh with Drogheda playing a very high tempo pressing game. Drogheda had an opportunity but Noe Baba was on hand to clear away the danger. Mayo gradually got in control of the game, with Patrick Moran pulling the strings in midfield, setting up attacking phases of play, with Jesse Devers and Liam Flatley looking a handful for the fullbacks to deal with. Mayo had opportunities through Liam Flatley, Simon Butler and Fionan Duffy, with the latter having a great strike beaten away by the goalkeeper. Mayo's battling qualities took them up to half time with the tie poised.
The second half saw Drogheda coming at Mayo, but Mayo regained the initiative, with Simon Butler being denied by a great save by the keeper. Mayo had a penalty appeal turned down for a handball, with one supporter asking was the referee French (in relation to Thierry Henry's handball)? Mayo were in control and were assertive, but had to wait until four minutes from time when Jamie Feeney came off the bench to smash home the winner with only four minutes remaining. Mayo remained disciplined and focused to see out the remainder of the game, and the full time whistle brought celebrations. Mayo now play West Cork in the final tomorrow morning at 10:30. It will be a challenge to succeed, but with confidence running through the squad now, they are in with a fighting chance. These bunch must not be written off.
Mayo: Adam Chambers, Sean Morrisey, Noe Baba, Cian Coleman, Michael Bell, Liam Flatley, Patrick Moran, Brian Spring, Jesse Devers, Simon Butler.
Sub: Jamie Feeney-Jesse Devers.
MAYO V WEST CORK (KENNEDY TROPHY FINAL)
Mayo took on West Cork in the Kennedy Trophy Final in Limerick this morning and from the kick off, Mayo took the initiative, stroking and caressing the ball very well and left the Southerners chasing shadows. Fionan Duffy had the first opportunity, when his goalbound strike was squirmed away by the keeper. Mayo opened up the West Cork defence moments later when Noe Baba latched onto a slide rule pass to finish past the keeper. Jesse Devers had a great opportunity to double the lead moments later with a brilliant chance was pla, and Simon Butler looked good getting forward. West Cork came more into the game and Mayo were given a warning when Michael Bell was forced into an excellent tackle, his best tackle of the week. West Cork equalised with a run from midfield and a lob on goal, and Mayo started to rush their game for the remainder of the half.
Mayo started to settle again in the second half, showing some good link up play at times and were dominating territorially. However, Matthew Flanagan had to make a smart save low down. Fionan Duffy could have put Mayo back in front, but his snap shot went across goal. Mayo were now beginning to force a number of corners as their pressure told and looked dangerous each time. Mayo's pressure finally paid off when Liam Flatley's cross was parried by the keeper and Jesse Devers bundled the ball over the line. West Cork pressed forward for an equaliser and with tired legs, began to leave gaps in the defence. With minutes to spare, Jesse Devers was played in by Jamie Feeney and he struck across the keeper's left to give himself a brace, setting off wild celebrations. Devers nearly got his hat trick but Mayo held out as deserving winners of the Kennedy Trophy and the celebrations were wild at the finish. Liam Farrell, assisted by Tom Mullen of the SFAI, made the presentations, and Noe Baba, Mayo Captain, received the Kennedy Trophy. The Mayo squad burst into their squad anthem of Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You". It was a great week for the kids and the support from the parents have been unbelievable and thanks to everybody for making the week such a success.
Mayo: Adam Chambers, Sean Morrisey, Noe Baba, Michael Bell, Gary Boylan, Simon Butler, Brian Spring, Liam Flatley, Jesse Devers, Fionan Duffy, Jamie Feeney.
Subs: Matthew Flanagan-Adam Chambers, Cian Coleman-Gary Boylan, Darragh Quinn-Jesse Devers, Jarlath O'Malley-Michael Bell.
